The Importance and Power of
Language

.

.

Why is Language Important?

Wording and language are extremely important in the abortion controversy because many of the words used have a high emotional content.   And in case you haven't heard,  most people make their decisions based on emotion, and then later, think up reasons to justify their decisions.

u     How to Approach the Abortion Issue:

The first thing we need to understand is the power of language.   Let's start with "What our issue is"  and "What we are."   The issue is not abortion.   The issue is forced motherhood.   We support reproductive rights.  We oppose forced motherhood.   To see how well the forced motherhood leaders use language, please go to the section below:   Partial Birth Abortion Versus Mifepristone    and to the page titled:  Constantly Challenge Their Language.°

We support a shift to focusing on already born babies.°   We support a shift in focus away from forcing unwilling women to bear unhealthy and unwanted children that they simply cannot feed and care for -- children that will suffer and die.   40,000 of them die each and every day.°

How can we be pro-life unless our main focus is on these starving children?  Unfortunately, our efforts are being diverted to stop the so-called pro-life leaders from from interfering with our religious freedom and to stop them from form forcing unwilling women to become mothers.

We invite you, the reader of this page, to look at what the evidence tells us and then you decide how best to support life.   There are any number of specific point on which you can choose to focus  your attention.   Please go to our web site home pages and pick something that touches your heart and focus you efforts there.

u     Avoid Language Errors:

In the 2004, presidential campaign, John Kerry gave us an unfortunate example of significant  language error.   In one of his campaign speeches, he said,  "I believe that life begins at conception," and then in the next sentence he told the audience that he supported a woman's right to choose whether or not to have an abortion.  In different words, he told the fundamental Christians essentially this:   Abortion is murder and I support murder.    Can you see how this riled up the baby savers and inspired them to vote against him?

Here's an alternative statement:  The Evidence tells us that most likely human beings existed before conception, but nobody can prove this or disprove this.   And nobody can prove that life begins at conception, either, so in the absence of clear evidence, I choose not to force my personal beliefs onto others.   Therefore, I leave it to every women to reach into her own heart and make her own decision on this issue.

u     Partial Birth Abortion   Versus    Mifepristone

The anti-abortionists recently came up with the line “partial birth abortion,” a highly emotionally, even gut-wrenching phrase that immediately paints grotesque pictures in the minds of almost anyone who hears it.   As soon as it was coined, all the other no-choice supporters immediately jumped on it and since then,  all of them have been using  it every chance they get.    The result is that, almost overnight, it changed the image of what an abortion is.   It painted a false, surrealistic picture of every abortion being a wanton act of murdering a baby.

On the other side of this issue, here’s the latest word on the pro-choice side, Mifepristone, (a.k.a.   RU 486, the morning after pill).   Now I can’t say the pro-choice movement is responsible for the name Mifepristone, but neither have I haven’t heard any of them complaining about the name or suggesting anything else.

Mifepristone is a long, all-but-unpronounceable, mind-confusing, emotionless word that offers absolutely nothing to support the pro-choice cause.   If anything, the name has a negative impact on the use of the product.   If I may be blunt: Whoever came up with that name was either a clever, anti-choice supporter of he/she had his/her head way up in that place in his or her back side where the sun never shines.

It takes only a little imagination to come up with something far more appealing and much more functional than Mifepristone.   Perhaps it's time to put our minds in gear.   Here’s just a couple of  examples:

1)   The pregnancy avoidance pill --  the "pap" pill.   This name is in line with the health test that women commonly hearing about called a pap smear.   Thus it has a positive, health association.   This word is still a bit too technical and emotionless.

2)   The “Lassy” pill    an acronym for “love and sex - save yourself.”   When you hear the word Lassy spoken, what do you think of?    I can’t speak for you, but I think of an innocent young woman or a beautiful and very intelligent dog.   And it’s not spelled “Lassie,” so one can claim we are stealing the name of a wonder dog.   And besides, who can be opposed to love, to sex, or to saving yourself?

Please, somebody come up with some appropriate language to support choice.   And one more thing, RU-486

                           IS NOT AN ABORTION PILL!

                                                        It’s a safe sex pill!

u     Forced Motherhood Versus Abortion

The anti-choice people have been programmed to believe that they are fighting against baby killers.   According to their religious convictions, abortion kills babies.**   Such language has a strong emotional appeal.   The word abortion is strongly connected with this belief.   It's time to stop using the word abortion.

We need to shift the focus from the zygote/ embryo/ fetus to the pregnant woman and  focus not on abortion but on preventing forced motherhood.

**  The truth of falseness of their belief is another issue.
It is covered in detail on several of our web pages pages such as:
Life Begins When ???...°
Conception-Magic Act)
 °  and
The [Roman] Catholic Encyclopedia's Perspective on when Life Begins
°

We are adamantly opposed to forcing unwilling women to bear unwanted children.    We Oppose Forced Motherhood.    The second part of this shift is to create an alternate word or phrase  to replace the word abortion.   (See the next section below.)

u     Inpreterm

Can anybody think of a reason or two why it might be appropriate to stop using the word "abortion" and come up with a new word that means:  "To Intentionally Terminate a Pregnancy."?   Well, I'll start and you can contact us and give some additional reasons.

1)   The word "abortion" been badmouthed for years by the anti-choice people.

2)   It's now filled with inaccurate, deceptive, and misleading negative connotations  (i.e. partial birth abortion)

3)   It's meaning has already been defined by the no-choice people
       as killing a baby.

4)  One cannot win a war from a defensive position.

Inpreterm is the best word that our think tank has, up to now, come up with as a definition of  "To Intentionally Terminate a Pregnancy.

Here are some ways to view Inpreterm:

1)   Inpreterm is a safe, fifteen-minute, medical  procedure which is freely chosen by the pregnant woman, with the guidance of her family and friends, with the advice and assistance of a competent, trained, medical practitioner, and with a mutual agreement between the pregnant woman and  the Eternal Divine Being who would inhabit the body being created if the pregnancy were carried to term.

.

2)   My decision to inpreterm is based on my personal religious belief that I am   (and every other human being is)  an Eternal Divine Spirit that is temporarily inhabiting a human body for the purpose of having an Earthly experience.

I therefore declare my God-granted, Divine, free-will-right to interact with a fellow Eternal Divine Being in any way the two of so choose.  At this time, I choose to stop building another human body inside my body.   I have thoroughly discussed this decision with the Eternal Divine Being who would inhabit the body being created if the pregnancy were carried to term.   We are in agreement; therefore, the pregnancy is inpretermed.

.

3)   The pregnant woman speaking to the Eternal Divine being who would inhabit the body being created if the pregnancy were carried to term:

"Dear Fellow Eternal Divine Spirit,
I'm not ready to be a mother, so I'm not going to
build a body for you to come into.   Perhaps we
can get together at a later date.

.

4)   By my God-granted right of self-determination, I choose, at this time, to inpreterm.

.

5)   Inpreterm is a logical option in cases of pregnancy resulting from  rape or incest.

.

6)   I have thoroughly examined the option and the personal costs and consequences in my life regarding the choice to inpreterm or carry this pregnancy to term.   I choose to continue my education and my career and; therefore, I choose to delay becoming a mother until a later time.   For me, personally, inpreterm is, at this time and under these circumstances, the right choice.

Additional Pages Dealing with
 The Power of Language

The Reasonables°

The Reasonables  is a label we've coined to describe people who think outside the box.°    They combine reason and emotion.   They combine head and heart.   They don't fit exclusively under any traditional label,  such as liberal or conservative.   They refuse to ignore that which counters their beliefs.  They refuse to duck the tough questions.   They refuse to live in denial.

Cleaning Up the Liberal Label°

Given the way the word 'Liberal" has been intentionally slandered, is it any wonder the it's a turnoff for many voters nowadays?   The word  is desperately in need of a facelift.   When you look at its dictionary definition,  being liberal nothing to hide from or be ashamed of.   The problem is that the word has been intentionally  slandered by those who proudly wear the label "conservative."

Distinguishing Between Secular and Sacred°

One could justifiable say that either everything is sacred or nothing is.°    One could also say that, on the physical plane of duality, there is a distinction between that which is considered sacred (having spiritual / religious significance) and that which is considered secular (relating only to worldly physical things).   There is a tendency to lose this distinction. This page will assist you to distinguish that which is secular from that which is sacred.
