The
Letter's Intention: The
letter below was written from the perspective of someone who appears to be
rather unschooled about abortion and about the Christian Bible. It's
not until the reader gets into the middle of the letter, that he or she realizes that it's
neither naive or innocent. Rather, it's designed:
1) To Expose the
fundamental truth about the religious nature of
the forced motherhood issue.
2) To challenge the hypocrisy of those leading the anti-choice
movement, and
3) To
describe the dire, negative consequences to those who
support and/or engage in
anti-choice activities.
It will probably scare many of the followers away
from further anti-choice support and activities. Here's how it
works:
The
Inspector Columbo Approach:
You've probably seen the TV detective series called "Columbo," in
which the police detective appears to be a bumbling old fool who wears a
wrinkled rain coat no matter what the weather is. Actually he's
being rather clever and sets up the "wrong doer" to stumble over
him or herself and, in the process, Inspector Columbo solves the crime. Well, the
letter below is the Pro-Truth Team's "Columbo Letter."
Why
Use this Approach: Because
it speaks directly into the belief system of the vast majority of those opposing
abortion rights. It explains that anti-choice activities are a
pathway to (in their language) hellfire and damnation. It uses the
same motivational principle that the Fundamentalist leaders use to get their
believers to do as they tell them.
Here's
an example of how the power of belief controls behavior. During the Korean war, the American
military supplies were
regularly stolen in spite of being fenced off and watched over by armed
guards. The South Korean supplies were rarely ever stolen although
they had only a strand of rope around them and no guards. A single human
ear hung on the rope. The people were kept away by their belief
system. They believed that if their body became deformed, they could
not get into heaven, and the punishment for getting caught stealing supplies was
to lose an ear and; therefore, be excluded from heaven.
