Science
In the scientific community, all theories are just that -- theories.
Their acceptability or their rejection is based on the rules of scientific
evidence. All theories are
adjustable and/or replaceable when additional evidence so indicates.
The
evidence is the authority. Every
theory is mercilessly subjected to
scrutiny. Question after question is asked about its authenticity.
Prior to being
accepted as fact, all
evidence must be peer-reviewed, testable, repeatable, and physically provable.
Science
is flexible. It welcomes challenges. It seeks the truth regardless
of where the truth leads. Science is open to new ideas, but it
ruthlessly challenges them and questions them when they first appear.
.
.
Religion First we need to
be clear that there is a vast difference between a religion's
original, and basic philosophy and the social hierarchy
(the men) that control the religion's social structure and attempt to tell
everybody what the original philosophy means. For clarification of
this distinction, see the page titled Religion
Versus God..
To further
clarify the distinction between science and religion, we'll use the major
denominations of Christianity in our example below.
The men who run the major,
Christian social structures are quite the opposite of those prominent in the
scientific community. Although they will never publicly admit it,
most Christian religious hierarchies challenge new idea from the perspective
that new ideas are a threat to their power and control.
The people who run these
organizations claim to already know the complete truth. The sum
total of God's truth is contained in one book and in one book only, the
Christian Bible, and God's truth, as expressed in that Bible, dominates
everything.***
The Catholics
have even declared their leader to be infallible. Thus they have built
themselves into some very small belief boxes and spend the vast majority of their time and effort
defending ancient, undefendable proclamations which were, centuries ago,
accepted without question as "the truth." God's
Conception-Magic Act. is clear example of this.
|
***[Before they even get our of the starting gate, they are
already in trouble. There are several variation of the Bible. Which one is the
absolute literal, irrefutable truth?]
|
.
They have placed God in an
"out there separate from us" position. They have separated
themselves from nature. They have made dozens of unprovable
proclamations. They function out of an us against them
mentality. They are constantly at war with something.
Scarcity is prevalent in their thinking. (For further clarification,
readers are directed to the page titled: Understanding the
Anti-abortionist's
Mentality..)
Religious
structures are about as flexible as a rock. They are also very
brittle. New ideas cause them to break into smaller pieces.
For example, Christianity now has over three thousand factions.
Religious
social structures cannot stand the light of open, and challenging
questions. They teach what to think and not how to
think. Independent thinking about anything religious is
discouraged. Questioning a leader's authority or the validity of a
leaders proclamation is heresy.
.
.
Regarding religion, there are
very few facts. Here's a few the we know:
1) The transcendent unknown that we refer to
with words such as "God" is the ultimate and most profound mystery of life.. It's unknown, and at
the present time, it's unknowable. It transcends
thinking. It is simply
impossible to know with provable certainty anything at all about what we refer
to as "God."
2) We as humans
are intimately connected to that indefinable, mysterious source. We
are, in one way or another, a part of that source. Whatever
that source is, it has a profound affect upon us. We can deny it's
existence, but cannot divorce ourselves (or our social structures) form it.
3) All written
and spoken statements about what we refer to as "God," are expressions
of conjecture, opinion, beliefs, guesswork, and in some cases, outright
fairytales.
4) Everything that is
believed about "God" is accepted by way of a leap
of faith.. In other words,
it's accepted with no proof at all. Those who claim a ancient,
sacred writings as proof have simply moved their leap of faith onto a book.
Understanding the above four
facts in no way damages or destroys man's intimate relationship with the mystery
we call God. It merely alters the playing field. For
example when scientists discovered that the Earth was round, that simply changed
the human perspective on the ultimate mystery.
It also required those who
preach about God to adjustment their behavior and conform to the new
evidence. Based upon the vast amount of new evidence that has been
discovered since "the Earth became round," it appears that we are long
overdue for a major alteration in the behavior of church leaders.
Church leaders are, today, in
a crisis situation. They must change. If they don't,
they will lead their sheep and push the rest of us into
oblivion. They
could; however, easily climb out of their hole. Here's how..

about our relationship to the source we call God, see the page

If you pray, you might add
this to your prayers: "Dear God, protect us from those who
think they know the truth and are intending to force their religious fantasies onto the
rest of us."
